10 Safety Measures at Home You Should Teach Your Kids

Every parent must prioritize the safety of their children; however, they can only do so much to guarantee their safety.

Kids can still get into accidents at home because they don’t know what’s safe and what’s not. There are certain things such as safety measures and rules that you must teach your kids so they remain safe.

Here are the 10 essential safety measures to teach your kids:

1. Emergency Numbers

First and foremost, teach your children to use a phone and dial the local emergency number, such as 911. Teaching your kids your contact information and how to use the telephone is very helpful in case of an emergency.

You should also make your kids remember the home address and teach them other emergency contacts, such as your close relatives or friends.

If your kid doesn’t understand what you explained that well, then try acting it out or doing a roleplay so that it’s easier for them to understand and react accordingly during an emergency.

2. Don’t Open the Door for Strangers

Another important safety measure that your kids should know about is not talking to strangers or opening the door for them even if they claim that they know their parents.

There have been many incidents where strangers lure kids into their homes by telling them that they have gifts and treats with them and that their parents know them. This should give you all the more reason to teach your kids to keep all of the doors of the house locked.

It’s best to teach children to let adults answer the door. Moreover, teach them how to answer the door without opening the latch or lock in case of emergencies.

3. Stay Away from the Medicine Cabinet

As a parent, it’s important to make sure that all of your medicine is kept out of your kids’ reach. Ideally, all medicine should be in a kid-proof cabinet. You must also teach your children that they cannot handle medicine, especially without adult supervision.

You should also teach them not to eat any medicine that isn’t given to them by you. You should keep in mind that medicine is harmful to children if consumed in large amounts, even if it’s meant for children. Therefore, children should be taught to not take any medicine without permission.

4. Don’t Play on The Road

Letting your kids play outside is a great way for them to exercise and be active. However, you must make sure that they don’t play on the road, no matter how safe it may seem to you. The road is not a safe place for a child to play, as they could get severely hurt from getting hit by a car or a motorist. You should let your kids play in your backyard or lawn instead.

5. Don’t Touch Household Chemicals

Cleaning chemical products, paints, and other household chemicals are things that are common in every home. You must make sure that these chemicals aren’t left out in the open in your house while your kids are around, especially if they’re very small. You should make them understand to not touch those chemicals if they see one lying around the house.

6. Don’t Go Near Gas Appliances

Gas appliances are prone to exposing harmful gases to kids due to gas leaks. To avoid that from happening, you should make your kids understand why they should stay away from those gas appliances.

You should also have a gas safety check performed by a registered gas safe engineer every year who can issue a gas certificate that proves that your gas appliances are safe to use.  This way, you can prioritize your kids’ safety as well as your own.

7. Handle Electrical Appliances Under Supervision

Water is a good conductor of electricity. With this fact in mind, you should be very careful around the electrical appliances in your home. You have to make sure that those electrical appliances don’t have any contact with water and forbid your kids from going near them or touching them with wet hands. Make a list of things that they can’t touch, such as:

  • Toasters
  • Hairdryers
  • Power sockets and wires

8. Restrict Kids From Climbing On Furniture

As we all know, kids are very active and can turn anything into a playground, even their own homes. Most times, their play sessions involve climbing on furniture and running around the house; this can lead to accidents that can cause minor/severe injuries. Hence it’s your responsibility as an adult to inform them and restrict them from climbing on furniture for their safety.

9. Stay Away from Sharp Items

Advise your children to stay away from sharp objects. If they are required to use it for making an art and craft project, make sure it’s used in the presence of an adult. Keep sharp items out of reach so that your kids are prevented from any unnecessary harm. Otherwise, they not only can cause harm to themselves but also others.

10. Avoid Sharing Personal Information Online

Many parents give their children electronics such as mobile phones and iPads at a very young age because nowadays they are required for school, entertainment, and everything in between.

The internet is fun to use and offers many benefits. However, it also has a negative side that many parents forget to warn their kids about. Some websites can expose kids to harmful content and manipulate them into sharing their personal information.

Advise your children to stay away from such websites and keep an eye on their online activity. It’s best to have a detailed discussion with your kids about internet ethics and internet safety before allowing them access to the internet.

Now You Know How to Keep Your Kids Safe at Home

It’s the responsibility of every parent that they keep their children safe from any kind of harm. By following the above-mentioned safety measures, you can provide your children with a harm-free environment in your home.
