12 Rules for Learning Foreign Languages in Record Time

Learning a foreign language can seem like an intimidating task, but it doesn’t have to be! With the right strategy, anyone can master their target language. If you are looking to learn the Turkish language or thinking of opting for an online Turkish language course with a certificate, there are 12 steps to learn it faster than ever before!

1) Find the Right Language Teacher

It’s better to take classes from a native speaker rather than learning from a fellow student or even a course book. Even though it can be costly, you will learn far more if you study with someone who has mastered their own language.

2) Have Fun While Learning

Most people approach language learning as a chore, so they simply try to force themselves to learn new words and phrases that have no meaning in their day-to-day lives. This makes it much harder to remember what you’ve learned later on. The best way to learn is by immersing yourself in your target language: read books written in your target language, watch movies, listen to music and talk with native speakers whenever possible.

3) Use the Right Study Materials

Not all study materials are created equal. Some may be too simple and some may be too difficult. The key is to choose materials that will match your level of understanding. If you’re a beginner, you should use the material at a beginner level. Whatever language you are willing to learn, you can find the materials for it on the internet. For example, if you wish to learn the Turkish language, you can find various Turkish language courses online and find material as per your current requirement.

4) Take Regular Breaks

Being a student of a foreign language is mentally taxing, so it’s important to take regular breaks. Not only will they give you time to relax, but they’ll help you keep your brain fresh and active.

5) Practice Makes Perfect

You won’t improve your foreign language skills if you never use them. The best way to practice is by getting out there and speaking with native speakers, or even better, by traveling to where that language is spoken.

6) Start with an Open Mind, and Don’t Be Afraid to Make Mistakes

When learning a foreign language, approach it with an open mind. If you are self-conscious about mistakes you make, you might be more likely to avoid speaking your target language entirely. This defeats the whole purpose of foreign language study!

7) Develop Your Listening Skills First

It’s important to develop your listening skills before you try to speak a foreign language. If you don’t understand what people are saying, it’s going to be a lot harder to create natural conversations.

For example, if you want to learn Romansh, you may learn a lot by meeting up with local people or visiting Switzerland.

8) Write Down What You Have Learned on Paper or in a Digital Journal

If you’re trying to learn a new language, it can be extremely helpful to write down what you have learned on paper or in a digital journal.

9) Create Goals for Yourself

In order to reach your end goal, you need to set a series of smaller goals along your journey. This will ensure that you’re keeping your eyes on what really matters and won’t give up when things get tough.

10) Embrace Your Mistakes

If you don’t make mistakes, you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough. That doesn’t mean we should all be looking to mess up on purpose (obviously), but by thinking of our errors as opportunities to get better, we open ourselves up to a whole new level of learning.

11) Improve Your Learning Level

You’ll need to be able to speak and understand a language to a degree, but all you really need is an ability to hold basic conversations. The more advanced your level of language skills are, however, the better off you will be when it comes to actually learning how to read or write in that language.

12) Become a Polyglot

This should be obvious but it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and attempt to speak another language with people who are native speakers. It’s also important to put yourself in situations where you must communicate solely in a foreign language.

The Bottom Line

Learning a foreign language can seem like an impossible feat without the right tools, but with the right mind-set and understanding of how to learn, you can achieve this goal in record time!
