6 Extreme Sports For Children: Exciting Adventure Activities For Kids

Kids and extreme sports can go well together with the right supervision and training.

You don’t want to put a child in a kayak and push them into the river without the proper knowledge and skills, but once they acquire those things, they can enjoy them.

Age appropriateness varies from child to child as well. Some kids will be fine on a mountain bike track at 7 years old, while others won’t be ready at 10. It’s all about knowing where they’re at and starting there.

Extreme Adventure Activities For Kids

Make sure you talk through these action sports with your children before giving them a go. You can watch videos on YouTube before starting, just so that they’re familiar with what’s going to happen.

Stepping into the complete unknown can be a bit scary, but with the right preparation and support, they’ll be able to have a lot of fun and thrilling new experiences.

Here are 5 adventure activities that you can think about doing with your children.

1. Axe Throwing

Axe throwing can be really dangerous if done incorrectly, but a lot of fun if done right. There are now a lot of axe-throwing centers throughout the USA that can help family groups get started.

These centers can provide throwing axes, targets, safety equipment, and training. Only one person should be throwing at a time and they should be aware of the proper techniques.

Kids start off with smaller, lighter throwing axes, and should only give it a go if they’re strong enough. Show them the correct stance, grip, and motion for throwing. Practice with sticks first till the get the release correct.

2. Frisbee Golf

Frisbee golf may seem to be a bit less extreme than axe throwing, but you really do have to watch out for those flying disks on the course.

Frisbee golf is an easy activity to start up as well, as you can go to your local sports field and just start practicing. As with the axes, teach your kid the proper way to stand, hold the frisbee, and throw it.

With this sport, it really is all about practicing. It’s hard to get good watching someone else throw, you need to learn what happens through experience.

3. Skateboarding

Skateboarding is an enjoyable and physically demanding outdoor activity. Kids learn balance and coordination through skating. They learn to smoothly stop and start and control their speed and direction. These are skills that are needed for anything, not just skating. It is important to take skateboarding lessons in one on one for children.

Children get a full-body workout when they skateboard because they move the board in a variety of ways. As they twist and turn, they work their arms, legs, torso, and feet. Skateboarding requires a lot of balance, so their core will get stronger and their legs will get a good workout.

4. Chainsaw Carving

Chainsaws are definitely not for younger children. However, mature kids 14 years and older might be able to start using a chainsaw.

Chainsaw carving is a unique activity that those who get into it really love. It’s a different way of expressing one’s artistic side and creating something of lasting value.

A kid’s chainsaw for this type of thing only needs to be low-powered and should only be used with the correct safety equipment. This includes chainsaw chaps or pants, earmuffs, goggles, gloves, and even arm protection.

Maturity is key for this one. Chainsaws can be extremely dangerous when used foolishly.

5. Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is a great adventure sport for kids. It’s easy enough to get them started on the pavement and transition them to tracks as they gain competence.

As with all of these extreme activities, make sure you’re always communicating with the child. You don’t want them to be uncomfortable, so make sure they’re on board and really want to give it a go. Make sure they know not to take risks – after all, health is wealth.

Work your way up to the more challenging routes, and don’t push them beyond their limits. Mountain biking can easily become a lifelong passion if they’re led into it gently.

6. Kayaking

Kayaking is another extreme sport that most kids can try out. It should go without saying, but start them off in still water.

Most people begin by paddling around a lake and only when they’re proficient do they go into the rivers. It’s easy to turn kids off this type of thing if they have a bad experience early on, so again, just take it one step at a time.

Knowledge is power, so make sure you or someone with experience teaches them the proper technique. Show them what to do if their kayak flips and how to use the paddles correctly. They’ll have a ton of fun if it’s done right!

Should Kids Do Extreme Sports?

Not all kids and extreme sports go well together – some kids will just hate it and would rather be watching cartoons.

However, extreme youth sports will be what other kids remember most. They will learn valuable new skills and likely grow in overall confidence.

Basketball and soccer are fun in their own right, but some kids want something a bit more thrilling, and some of these actions sports should fit the bill!
