Beyond the Floaties: Water Safety for Kids

Water Safety Tips for Parents

As parents, there are many ways where you can learn how to protect your kids from harm while they are swimming. You need to constantly supervise them, especially if they do not know how to swim. That is why you need to learn how to do CPR.

Drowning victims have a high chance of survival if you use CPR to revive them. If you have a pool at your home, you can hire a swimming pool builder to install a four-sided fence with a self-closing and self-latching gate around it. It should isolate the pool from wandering children.

You should also have rescue equipment nearby. Adults and children should be easily able to locate them. Ask your swimming pool builder to create a shed near your pool where you can house your rescue equipment. If your children are not swimming in your pool and are unsupervised, make them wear safety gear while swimming, like a lifejacket or floaties.

Essential Water Safety Gear for Kids

Safety gears come in different types, shapes, and sizes, catering to kids of all ages. Choose the proper swim goggles based on your swimming environment. Use wider goggles made from tempered glass with UV lenses while swimming in open water to provide a better view of your surroundings.

The UV protection will keep your children’s eyes safe from the sun, and the tempered glass can help them see better while swimming. Polycarbonate swim goggles with anti-fog lenses are lightweight and perfect for daily use because they prevent condensation from building up.

Lifejackets are also essential safety gear for swimming. It comes in different sizes, so swimmers of all ages can wear them. However, frequent use can wear and tear it. So, always inspect it before use. Check whether the straps are working. Your kids can also use swim fins and kickboards to help them swim.

These can also help them improve their swimming skills. Have a shed built by your swimming pool builder to house your safety gear, especially if you have some rescue gear. It should be near your pool, so it will always be accessible.

Innovative Floatation Devices

Puddle Jumper

A puddle jumper puts any parents’ minds at ease. They are the kid version of a lifejacket meant to be worn by toddlers. They are safer than traditional arm floaties because the bar on the chest prevents kids’ faces from the water, and the buckle at the back adds additional safety.

It prevents the device from slipping and toddlers removing it. Check the weight limit of a puddle jumper before purchasing one. It will be ineffective if your child is too heavy. It can also promote confidence in your child if they are too scared to swim or to get down in the water.

However, remember it creates a muscle memory that swim instructors may find hard to unlearn when teaching your child. Either way, it is a great safety device that keeps your kid from harm from swimming in a pool or open water.

Back Floaties

Black floaties are great for kids learning to swim, especially if they are learning to float on their backs. Since it is beginner-friendly, kids can jump in and out of the pool since it does not restrict their movement.

It is perfect for toddlers who are fussy and find a lifejacket or puddle jumper too heavy or restricting. You can secure it safely around your child’s back. It also has a weight limit, so check if your kid meets it before purchasing it.

Pull Buoys

If your child has mastered the basics of swimming but still needs improvement, pull buoys are perfect. It is a molded foam you place between your legs that works out specific parts of your body and muscle group that improves your ability to swim.

It also builds your strength, which helps you spend more time in the water without getting tired. People of all ages can use it since it comes in different sizes. Your child can master the backstroke and freestyle moves in the water thanks to this device.

Emergency Preparedness

Emergency preparedness is more than just making your kids wear safety devices, installing a protective fence around your pool, and stocking the shed your swimming pool builder built with safety and rescue equipment. It starts with discussing safety rules they need to observe while swimming.

They should not run and stop roughhousing with other children to avoid slipping and falling on water. They should only swim in shallow areas, especially if they are not expert swimmers. As an adult, you should always watch your kid. If they are not swimming with you, there should be adult supervision.

Only swim in places with lifeguards, so you know help will always be on the way whenever you need it.

Fun in Safety

Your children can still have fun while being mindful of their safety in water. Establish firm rules with your kids whenever they are swimming. And always keep a close eye on them. Have an adult who knows CPR, whether it is you or a lifeguard, supervise them. Invest in protective swimming equipment, or if you have the budget, have your swimming pool builder install a protective fence with alarms around your pool.

Swimming is a fun and joyful activity you can enjoy with your loved ones. You can still have fun while letting safety be in charge.
