Common Comedy Club Rules You Need to Know

Have you never been to a comedy club before? You might not be aware of what you can expect when it comes to the rules. Of course, the purpose of a comedy club is for everybody to come together and have fun. You can listen to stand-up comedians share their stories, as well as laugh and release a lot of stress. It can be just what is needed after a long week and a good way to spend time with friends and family.

But, in order to have a good time, you need to know the rules. Plus, you have to follow them. This ensures everyone can come together and have a memorable night. So, here are some common comedy club rules you need to know before your first visit.

Choose Shows You Will Like

The first rule of a comedy club is a simple one. Make sure that you select a show you think you will like. The idea is that you are going to be on your best behaviour when you are enjoying the show. Some people will turn up at a comedy club randomly as the last resort and for something to do. They will not research the acts or know what they are going to see. If they do not like the show, they can end up disturbing others that do.

Thus, do your research and find performers that share your sense of humour. This is going to make sure that you have a fantastic night and you will be more engaged with the show. For instance, you can visit Comedy Carnival to see some famous performers. Book now so that you have your tickets in advance. Most clubs will not take people at the door and you have to have your ticket before the show begins. So, booking online makes sure that you get in without any problems.

Switch Off the Mobile Phone

Imagine you are a comedian and you are doing a show. Everyone is sitting on their mobile phones. How would this make you feel? You would probably be annoyed and feel as if you were wasting your time. Nobody is paying attention and you are not able to feed off the energy of the crowd. There will be no engagement and the atmosphere will be boring for everyone involved.

Therefore, know that it is important to switch off your mobile phone before a show begins. This is going to allow you to respect the comedian, as well as enjoy the show. You can shut off the outside world and relax away from notifications. Plus, if your mobile phone rings, it will no longer disturb other audience members either.

No Heckling During the Show

There was once a time when heckling was common during comedy shows. But, you have to understand that this is no longer something that is accepted in comedy clubs. It is now thought to be harassment and it can be uncomfortable for comedians. So, the rule is, even if you disagree with a story or you want to raise a question, it is best to keep it to yourself.

Heckling can mean that you are removed from the comedy club. This is the last thing you want and could be quite embarrassing. Again, avoid speaking out during a show and instead, keep your opinions to yourself.

Stay In Your Seat

Often, there are several performers during a comedy show. This means you will have to sit for a while. Indeed, when you are having fun, this does not feel long. But, if you are not enjoying yourself, you might be tempted to get up and leave or even go to the bathroom more than you normally would.

Well, this is something that you are encouraged not to do during a comedy show. Yes, you are not banned from leaving your seat. But, you do not want to interrupt the show and disturb the performer or other audience members. So, try to stay in your seat for most of the show. If you do need the bathroom, only go when there is a convenient break. Avoid leaving if it is unnecessary.

Avoid Excessive Talking

Perhaps you are meeting at a comedy club in order to enjoy time with friends. You want to see a show together and catch up. Well, the catching-up part will need to be before or after the show. You do not want to be talking throughout the show and distracting the performer. It is disrespectful to them and it can even mean that you have a joke pointing at you because of your excessive talking.

What’s more, talking through a show can be a distraction for other members of the audience. Remember that everyone is there to listen to the jokes and stories. They are not going to be able to do this fully if you are chatting with your friend. Sure, you can make quiet comments about the show if you are having a good time. But, this should not be a long conversation that becomes a distraction.
