Encouraging Family Fitness

A lot of the time, many habits that we pick up are a result of learned behavior. This can be used both positively and negatively, especially in a family setting. A primary example is the health and fitness habits that we happen to adopt and exhibit at home. If, for instance, kids are used to seeing their parents eat healthy meals and exercise regularly, they probably have a higher chance of following in their footsteps. For this reason, this article is going to highlight three practical ways that you can encourage family fitness in your home and hopefully set your kids on the right path.

Walk Instead of Taking the Car

If you happen to drive, it is likely that you take your car to most of your destinations. To lead by example and encourage your kids to be more fit, you should consider leaving the car behind from time to time. For distances that aren’t too far such as school runs, why not walk or take public transport instead? This should help keep their hearts pumping and give them the energy they need to start the day. Some benefits of walking include fighting dementia, helping keep your heart healthy, and helping to lift your mood. Sharing these benefits with your kids may prove to be a good way to get them enthusiastic about walking as well.

Encourage Early Morning Activity

The morning rush is the perfect time to encourage physical activity. This may be especially effective if you have kids who are sluggish when it comes to waking up for school. Try making the home environment lively in the morning by playing some of your favorite songs. You can encourage a quick morning dance to awaken your senses and increase your energy levels. Dancing can help you in many ways including helping your cardiovascular system, improving memory, and helping balance and coordination. Another good thing about dance is that it is something that is suitable for all ages. Your kids may look at you funny or laugh when you dance, but the health benefits are the same for all of you.

Play Sports Together

In your free time, playing sports together as a family is a great way to stay active. You could decide to engage in a game of football in your back garden, have swimming competitions, or play a game of basketball at your local park. There may be some days when you’re too busy to play sports as a family. If your kids attend a private institution like Downsend School in Surrey, however, then they can play football before school starts or during their break. This way, they’re able to incorporate fitness into their daily routine.

If you want your child to practice healthy habits, it is important that you try to instill them early on. This means making a conscious effort to develop good habits on a daily basis and participate in that process as well. Healthy living is something that can be beneficial throughout the course of your lives, so the earlier you start, the better.
