The Best Ways to Quickly Teach Your Child to Write and Read

Learning reading and writing should start from early childhood, not when kids start attending school. Parents are tasked with providing their kids with basic knowledge of reading including sounds, letters, and basic vocabulary.

Therefore, in this article, we would like to discuss the working methods of how to teach kids to read and write quickly and how to attract them to education, making this process fun and pleasurable.

Reading and writing skills to develop

Reading and writing are the fundamentals skills that each kid has to be proficient in. These skills consist of several parts or better say topics that should be considered and learned separately from the beginning. So, reading and writing need to be developed due to each of these parts being on the same level, as it is not enough just to write down or read the letters or separate words. These are the parts:

  • phonemic—the ability to perceive and recognize sounds aurally
  • phonics—the ability to recognize the letters by sounds
  • vocabulary—being aware of the meanings of the words overall and the ways they can be used in the sentences
  • reading comprehension—being aware of what the text kids read is about despite its length
  • fluency—understand the text kids are reading or writing, even when doing that quickly

Best ways to teach children reading and writing

Patience for parents is a key to success

The speed of learning depends on the abilities of every kid. Foremost, it is essential not to compare the results of your children with other kids. You need to make the learning process maximum engaging, easy and pleasant to reach great results in the short term. It is not a one-day process and requires patience and regularity from kids as well as your side. Kids need to feel free with the ability to select the approach to learning they like, to read the book they want, and write the topics they would love to. It will make learning more effective and quicker.

Practice reading aloud for early childhood

It is never too easy to start reading aloud to your kid. You can boldly select the book you like or the book your kid would like and read while playing, while going to sleep, etc. It is a great method to get your kids familiar with the literature, different sounds, and letters, and also instill the love of reading books overall. We all know that kids will never be what they don’t like. So to make the process of teaching reading and writing more efficient and quicker for both of you, your task is to show the value of reading and that this activity can be exciting and engaging.

Phonemic as the fundamentals of reading and writing

As we mentioned previously, phonemic is the basics of reading and writing. Phonemes are sounds that have different meanings like vowels that can be short and long, consonants, etc. This science defines the sound of each word, its correct pronunciation, and stress. After learning the letters, this part is very important as it helps kids to determine and spell the words and sentences correctly. It is better to have audio lessons where kids can listen to different phonemes, their sounds, and their usage within the words, including exceptions to rules. Sometimes the audio version of sounds differs from the actual usage and writing. This is where phonetics becomes important. There are many credible publishers that have come out with phonics book sets to helps pick up reading.

Implement daily reading and discussion of books

As a parent, you need to be an example for your kids. Implement reading with your kids from early years on a daily basis. That is a great method to show your kids what fluent reading is, how the words sound and expand their vocabulary, which will simplify the learning process. When you and your kids are reading every day, it becomes a good habit that shows children that reading is an enjoyable and interesting activity. After you finish reading a book or a story, try asking questions about the book to know if your kids understand you well and if they learned a new word and pronunciations.

Try to integrate the learning process with games

You should the learning process that way, so your kids associate it with fun and joy instead of strict rules and lessons. Instead of simply learning new letters and words, integrate the process with games and fun activities. Think of quizzes, challenges, and interactions where your kids will be completely engaged in the process and really like the education. For instance, instead of writing down new words and their definitions, you can make the cards with different words to ask kids to discuss them, or make the cards with pictures where the kids need to guess what the word is hidden. Also, the lessons can be related to their favorite cartoons to make the learning process simple and fun.

Encourage kids to write a personal diary

Writing a personal diary or daily journal is a great method to practice writing and reading skills. Initially, grammar is not very important, as kids need to expand their vocabulary and gradually learn the language rules. Children can write about everything they see at school, on the streets, at home, the feelings and emotions they have during the day, etc. Parents are not obvious to read these personal notes, however, if the kids are willing to share their thoughts, you can read and discuss them together to assess the writing skills, and style and determine the mistakes to define the correct variant.

To conclude

Taking everything into account, the main condition of making the teaching process efficient is making it enjoyable and fun for kids. Using different interactive games, using the characters from cartoons, and setting goals and awards work much more effectively than strict daily schedules and long lessons where the focus and attention will probably be lost. Each kid requires an individual approach to learning, and it is essential for parents to be patient and keep teaching their kids, even if some areas don’t come easily.
