On August 10, 2020, Nickelodeon announced the development of a second spinoff series for SpongeBob SquarePants, with the focus shifting to Patrick Star. The new series, titled The Patrick Star Show, was set to follow Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.
In March 2021, Nickelodeon ordered 13 episodes for the show, scheduled for a summer 2021 release. A teaser trailer was released on May 31, 2021, with the series slated to premiere in July 2021. The official premiere date was confirmed as July 9, 2021.
Marc Ceccarelli, the showrunner, revealed that The Patrick Star Show’s writers intentionally pushed the boundaries of the original SpongeBob universe, allowing for more creative freedom. They aimed to deviate from canon and embrace a surreal and unpredictable approach in storytelling.
On August 11, 2021, Nickelodeon extended the series by ordering 13 additional episodes, totaling 26 produced episodes for the first season. On March 21, 2022, the network renewed The Patrick Star Show for a second season.
A crossover special called “SpongeBob Universe” was announced on July 21, 2022, featuring the main series, The Patrick Star Show, and Kamp Koral. Originally scheduled for November 25, 2022, the special titled “The Tidal Zone,” a parody of The Twilight Zone, was rescheduled for release on January 13, 2023.
The Patrick Star Show features a younger Patrick Star who resides at home with his family, hosting his neighborhood variety show from his bedroom, cleverly transformed from a television. The series stars Bill Fagerbakke as the young adult Patrick Star, joined by a talented cast including Tom Wilson as Cecil Star, Cree Summer as Bunny Star, Jill Talley as Squidina Star, and Dana Snyder as GrandPat.
Notably, the show maintains the iconic voices of the beloved SpongeBob SquarePants characters, with additional cast members including Tom Kenny, Rodger Bumpass, Carolyn Lawrence, Clancy Brown, and Mr. Lawrence reprising their famous roles.
Co-executive producers Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller, and Jennie Monica are at the helm of SpongeBob SquarePants, The Patrick Star Show, and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years. These animated series were developed for television by Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President of Animation Development at Nickelodeon, with Kelley Gardner, Vice President of Current Series Animation at Nickelodeon, overseeing production for all three shows.
