Maintaining a healthy body weight can present significant challenges. Today, a substantially larger chunk of the population is aware about the importance of weight management. Depending on your original lifestyle, the challenges can be bigger or smaller. However, the benefits that come with maintaining body weight at the optimal level can be substantial. It changes everything about you, inside out. You acquire a certain level of confidence and feel good about yourself. You look good, have a lot more energy, get focused, and actually achieve more in life.


The Dangerous “D-word”

Diet is a crucial component when it comes to maintaining your weight. Most people dread the word “diet” because it spells out as starvation or abandoning the food that you love altogether. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. Fad diets that offer short-term results often end up doing more damage than good. The secret to maintain body weight lies in understanding your body, its metabolism, and how it responds to the food you consume. This differs from person to person and you have to figure it out on your own through trial and error.

The Calorie Game

Everybody who ever intended to lose weight at some point in their lives has pretended to play the calorie game. When it comes to calorie management for weight loss, there’s no need to complicate something that’s so simple – You have to lose more than you take in, period.

When you start off with cutting calories and exercising, the rapid drop in weight you experience in the first couple of weeks will stop. Your body undergoes changes in terms of water weight, fat, and lean tissue, which consequently results in a decline in metabolism. So, understand this fact and implement a steady reduction in calorie intake over time to accommodate these changes.

Calories are like people in many ways. They’re not all the same. A hundred calories in sugar is different from a hundred calories in say leafy vegetables. They work differently inside your body.

To maintain body weight at an optimal level, the trick would be to eat foods that are less “stuffed” in calories. For instance, candy bars are stacked up with calories that just won’t go away. You can have them, but you will have to put in the work to lose them. It’s all about your priorities. You consume that amount of calories in leafy vegetables, you have clean energy that has you good to go.


Food is Fuel

Treat food as fuel, not a friend or morale booster. Sure, the joy of food lies in its diversity of taste and the pleasure it provides. However, when you’re working towards maintaining your weight, you need to explore more facets of food than just taste. A lot of people turn to pleasure food like fried chicken, ice cream, candy, and other fattening food as their TV companion at the end of a stressful day.

Eat when you’re hungry. When you’re stressed, go see a movie, visit friends, take a walk through a crowded mall, just get yourself in the middle of people.

Use Healthy Fillers

You don’t have to do away with your guilty pleasures. Have a sampling of those fries, a piece of fried chicken once a week won’t kill you. In the meantime, when you’re hungry on a routine day, make it a habit to fill yourself up with steamed vegetables, oatmeal, or low-sugar cereal as per your preference. You will notice the difference in everything you do. Try it for one week and the habit will kick in.

The above pointers should set you off in the right direction to maintain your ideal body weight. Once you adopt the right philosophy to food, everything else will fall into place. At the end of the day, you are what you eat!
