Passage 11 - Sasha’s Night Alone
This reading comprehension exercise will give fifth-grade students practice in reading and understanding simple passages.
Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions that follow.
1. It was an exceptionally dark night. Sasha looked out her window on the first floor of their house where she lived with her parents and elder brother. That night she was alone; her parents had gone to visit her brother at the university which was 60 miles away. Sasha had assured them that she would be fine alone. She had to take a Maths test the next day, and wanted to study.
2. “It is a cold night,” Sasha said to herself, as she let the breeze blow her hair away from her face. She decided to go to bed. After making sure that all doors and windows were locked, she climbed on to her bed. Following her routine, she read a book for a while in the light of the bedside lamp.
3. All of a sudden, she heard a rustling noise outside her window. She listened to it and decided that it was just the eastern wind. But she heard it again. There was a slight flutter of fear in her stomach this time. “I don’t have to worry about what is happening outside the house as long as it doesn’t enter the house,” she told herself. She drew her night gown tightly around herself and listened again.
4. Despite feeling very frightened, she finally decided to investigate what it was. She tiptoed to the window and opened it a little. A cold gust of wind greeted her and Sasha shivered, for more than one reason of course. There was the rustle of leaves again. She opened a little more. Now she could see a human form against the tree, outlined against the distant glow of the street light. It was crouching, but also leaning on the tree.
5. Sasha was now more curious than afraid. she took her torch light out of the drawer and shined the light on the form she had seen. Sure enough, there was someone there. It was a big monkey sitting there! It looked startled at the sudden burst of light on its face. Relieved, Sasha went back to sleep. “What an anticlimax!” she told herself. But there was a good story to tell her parents on their return, she thought happily.
