Bridgette was mortally scared of mathematics. For some reason, mathematics as a subject felt like a very ‘dry’ subject. She dreaded the mathematics lesson. it always occurred right after recess. This made it all the more difficult. Her recess was spent on dreading the next lesson.

One day, Mrs. Patterson, the dreaded Mathematics teacher, decided to make Maths fun for Bridgette. She told Bridgette certain fun facts about Mathematics.

  • What is 1089 times nine? It is 9801!
  • -40 degrees C is equal to? -40 degrees F!
  • What is a baker’s dozen? No, it is not 12. It is 13!
  • Where did the word ‘hundred’ come from? It comes from the old Norse term ‘hundrath’. And what does ‘hundrath’ mean? It means 120, not 100!

  • The number ‘four’ is special. Why? It is the only number that has the same number of letters as the number itself!
  • Have you heard the Americans call mathematics ‘math’? You know why? They argue that the word ‘mathematics’ is a singular noun, so ‘math’ should be singular too!
  • Mathematics is very old. Why? Humans have been doing mathematics since 30,000 BC. Now how do we know that? There are markings on animal bones that indicate that.

Thus ensuring that Bridgette was suitably interested in the fun side of mathematics, Mrs. Patterson began her lesson. It was division.
