Multiplication rocks!
As a form of arithmetic, multiplication should be quite familiar to you. Have you ever wondered how it originated? Of course, the individual founder is not known, but the multiplication table is very often associated with Pythagoras (570 – 495 BC) who lived in Greece. As you know, multiplication is a form of arithmetic. The word arithmetic originally meant ‘to reason or count’. Actual multiplication tables were first created in ancient Babylonia about 4000 years ago. It was used in ancient China also around 305 BC.
Are you an expert in manual multiplication or do you have to rely on a calculator all the time? If you are dependent on a calculator, the person you should thank is the German polymath Gottfried Leibnis, who made the prototype of the automatic calculator that we know.
Some kids think that learning mathematics is pointless. Who, after all, needs algebra in the real world? However, the fact is that without mathematics, there will be no technology, no architecture, no money …. in short, no modern life as we know it.
