Why Is Multiplication Important?
If you are like most third graders, you would have just been introduced to multiplication. Some of you might be interested, even excited and enthralled by it, but some others might be feeling otherwise. You might think that interest and capability in mathematics is inborn. This is not so. Anyone can master mathematics with regular practice. Have you wondered why you should learn times tables? Has anyone told you? You may be wondering why.
You may not be using multiplication in your life currently, but in course of time, as you grow older, learning to multiply is like learning to drive or cycle. It is a very useful skill that has applications in so many fields. For example, imagine that you have just started college. You have invited a few of your classmates to your house for dinner. You want to surprise everyone by baking a cake for them. You get a recipe for a cake from the internet. The recipe says that for every one cup of all purpose flour you should take two eggs. You want to bake a big cake. So, you are going to take three cups of flour. So how many eggs should you take? 2+2+2=6 eggs, right? If you know multiplication it is very easy. You just multiply 2 by 3. You get 6. Got it?
This is a small example of a very simple multiplication problem. Imagine the kind of multiplication that an engineer can make use of! All professions make use of mathematics to varying extents, but even if you are not in a profession in the future that makes use of multiplication or mathematics in general, in life itself you will have to use it.
Learning to multiply is actually like going on a roller coaster ride. You will have your ups and downs. At times you will be exhilarated when you get the correct answer to the question. At other times, when you don’t remember the times tables or simply don’t know how to do a multiplication problem, you will be down in the dumps. In any case, be assured that it is an interesting ride.
