Grade 5 English Lessons
Grade 5 students, who are mostly around 10 or 11 years of age, are on the threshold of teenage, and have been called ‘tweens’. This age is a transition time between the innocent dependance of young childhood and the rebellious independence of old childhood! In academics and in particular, langauge learning, the difference can clearly be seen in the way children approach their langauge lessons, and independent work.
Reading at this stage takes place at a frenetic pace in the case of those children who have a good reading habit. Those children who do not have the reading habit often give up books completely and take to computer games or the television. It is a challenge for the teachers to instil some affinity towards reading, in the case of the not-so-good readers.
Reading comprehension at this stage starts to be more complex and sophisticated. Students are often asked more difficult inferential questions, and sometimes questions that demand answers in their own words.
Writing abilities vary tremendously among preteens. This is mainly because of the attitudinal differences between individual learners. Those children who are patient, who have good study habits and are generally well-disposed towards academics write well. Those children who are hyper active, play computer games and watch television a lot, and whose parents do no invest time in children, tend to be not so good writers. It is a teacher’s challenge to devise writing activities that are interesting for preteens.
